How long have you worked in Edwards & Co?

I started with Edwards and Co in August 2016. Having trained with one of Belfast’s leading commercial firms, I spent the years preceding by commencement with Edwards and Co, working in a number of well respected practices.

Do you specialise in any particular area?

Since qualifying in 2005 I have worked across a wide range of legal practice. I specialise in the area of dispute resolution and litigation. My primary focus is offering advice to the firm’s commercial clients. This entails advising in matters of intellectual property/brand protection, defamation/libel, contractual disputes, debt recovery, corporate/company disputes and construction/property disputes. Edwards and Co has a strong emphasis on alternative dispute resolution, and so, in addition to traditional forums of dispute resolution, such as court, I offer advice on an alternative option, in the shape of mediation.

I also specialise in the area of sports law, having graduated with a Masters in sports law. This entails advising sports clubs and persons across a wide range of matters to include litigation, brand protection, contracts and disciplinary proceedings.

I am a Law Society accredited Solicitor Advocate.

What do you like about what you do?

There are many aspects of my job that provide me with satisfaction. I get great enjoyment from the daily interaction I have with clients as I try to guide them through what can often be very troubling and stressful waters. I find engaging with people in an effort towards achieving a satisfactory conclusion to a client’s problem to be very satisfying. Being able to look positively back on a case that you have assisted in resolving is definitely the most rewarding part of my job.

What’s the best case you’ve ever worked on?

Shortly after I qualified I acted for building company in a commercial dispute with a customer over alleged unpaid invoices. The value of the case was substantial to such an extent that the viability of my client as a business was at risk should the action have proven unsuccessful. After lengthy and protracted proceedings the matter eventually resolved in a manner satisfactory to my client. I have had many memorable cases since then for many different reasons and across many different areas, but this case always stuck in my mind. Being a young solicitor at the time it was the starkest of introductions as to the responsibility that comes with accepting instructions from any client. Thankfully I was able to assist in achieving a happy outcome for my client and I haven’t looked back since!
