Our business connections, clients and friends on Belfasthour will be well aware of our work with Bowel Cancer over the past 2 years in which we have raised over £40,000. However, our work is not just about raising money but also trying to help the Charity get their all important message out.

Bowel cancer is Northern Ireland’s second biggest cancer killer. Around 1,100 men and women are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year in Northern Ireland, and 400 people die from the disease. If diagnosed at the earliest stage, bowel cancer is highly treatable, with a survival rate of more than 93% over five years. However, poor awareness means that only 1 in 10 cases are detected at an early stage which often means it is too late to be treated.

While we cannot stress enough the importance of early diagnosis there are also steps that can be taken to lower the risk of this disease such as diet, exercise and weight control. April is Bowel Cancer awareness month and in conjunction with the Charity and our friends in Novosco we are going to incorporate these aspects in our next joint fundraiser.

The event will take place on Friday 16th June from 1pm to 5pm.

Edwards and Co and Novosco (and many others) will have 1 or 2 rowing machines at their offices or close by with individuals rowing for 15 -30 minutes each, the machine will be zeroed at 1pm and stopped at 5pm with the team rowing the furthest being declared winners of the Bowel Cancer challenge Cup. We reckon that in 4 hours we should be able to easily row 42k hence the event name #RowAMarathon .

If we only have 2 teams we may row the 84k between us but we will have failed in our goal of raising awareness of this disease. SO, we are encouraging other teams to join us on the day the only equipment required is a rowing machine and a few willing (or not so willing) participants. We are greatly encouraged by the number of businesses, bars, Gyms etc who have intimated a willingness to take part not just in Belfast but west of the Bann also.

We really need your help to make this a success, we are confident that friends in the media will help and on the day Novosco will tour the country recording participants in action. Although keen to raise finance as well we will leave it up to the teams to simply raise as much as they can. Each week we will publish a list of those who have signed up and we really need that commitment in writing from you if possible so please register with.
