Information on CEDR mediation services

"Mediation is a flexible process, conducted confidentially, in which a neutral person actively assists parties in working towards a negotiated agreement of a dispute or difference, with the parties in ultimate control of the decision to settle and the terms of resolution."

This is the definition used by CEDR, the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution, which is the largest organisation promoting and regulating the use of alternative dispute resolution in both the UK and internationally.

Dorcas Crawford completed her training as a mediator with CEDR in October 2008 and is a member of both the UK and Irish CEDR panels. She has mediated a number of disputes throughout the UK and offers services to parties who wish to engage in a dispute resolution process. In conjunction with CEDR, Dorcas is able to offer a complete service from preparation for the process through to the practical arrangements for the mediation, allowing the parties to direct their minds fully and without distraction to the process itself.

Dorcas is a strong advocate of the mediation process. Having been a litigation solicitor for many years she now feels that alternative dispute resolution has numerous advantages by comparison, for example:
  • over 70 per cent of cases referred to CEDR Solve settle.
  • most mediations are arranged within a few weeks (and can be arranged even more quickly) and the formal mediation session usually lasts for one or two days only.
  • compared with litigation processes, mediation is a less expensive route to resolving disputes.
  • Mediation gives parties control over the process and the outcome.
  • Mediation can run alongside litigation or you may prefer to put the litigation process 'on hold' while you mediate
  • Mediation can maintain business relationships far more effectively than litigation.
  • A wide variety of settlement options can be achieved in mediation over and above monetary settlements.
  • It is informal and flexible - it can accommodate a variety of clients' needs
